Did you know that May is Better Hearing Month?

This is a month dedicated to the appreciation of and education about hearing loss, and how people can protect their hearing to maintain the best hearing possible.

We at OHC pride ourselves in being able to promote what we think are the most effective hearing aids, and being able to share as much information about better hearing as we can. Thanks to ASHA, we have added resources to share this month for all things hearing related.

For this first blog of the month of May, we thought we’d share some facts about hearing loss as well as some tips for protecting your hearing.

First of all, did you know that approximately 40 million U.S. adults aged 20 to 69 years have noise-induced hearing loss? That is a high number indeed. It is important to know that listening to noise levels above 75 decibels (dBA) regularly can cause hearing loss over time. This can mean anything from a loud hairdryer to motorcycles to prolonged listening to your music too loud.

With all of that being said, we thought we’d share a list of 8 ways to protect your hearing, sourced from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

This list is intended to help prevent noise-induced hearing loss when it comes to time spent in noisy environments:

  1. Wear hearing protection such as earmuffs, earplugs or even noise-cancelling headphones if you are in a situation where the noise is not integral to the experience you are trying to have.

  2. Stand as far away as possible from the noise source (like speakers at a loud concert)

  3. Research noise level at the place or event you will be attending by through online review sites.

  4. Visit noisy establishments only at off-peak hours.

  5. Download a smartphone app that monitors noise level.

  6. Take periodic listening breaks, especially when it comes to headphones.

  7. Ask managers to reduce the noise in too-loud restaurants and health clubs.

  8. Leave immediately if you feel pain or hear ringing in your ears.

We hope this list has given you some new ideas on how to protect your hearing.
